Our history

F W TurtonFrederick William Turton founded the firm on 7 December 1911, and for many years provided conveyancing services to private clients and development companies.

In 1941 the firm became known as Turton & Souter when Mr Turton was joined by his daughter, Betty, who was one of the first women lawyers in private practice in NSW.

During the early 1950s the firm became known as F W Turton & Co, with Betty Henry becoming the principal of the firm on Mr Turton’s death in 1960. For over 50 years from 1911 until the mid 1960s, the firm was located on the corner of Pitt & Hunter Streets, in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District.

In 1972, Bill Henry, the present leader of the firm, joined the practice, becoming a partner just prior to his mother Betty’s death in 1975. At that time there were 3 staff members who had been with the firm for 50 years or more!

In the late 1970s and early 1980s the firm grew significantly, merging with several other firms in a short period of time.

In 1995, in order to develop what he saw as the ideal workplace environment to best service his clients, Bill Henry returned to the smaller firm environment and the firm adopted its present name of Turtons Lawyers. Since then, the firm has been centrally located in Martin Place.
